On 19^th January, Lily Moore released ‘Hard Days Love’.

London-based powerhouse Lily Moore has returned with her brand new single, ‘Hard Days Love’. Showcasing her signature soulful and soaring vocals, the track was co-written by Lily and The Nocturns, who also produced the song. The long-awaited ‘Hard Days Love’ is Lily’s first musical offering since her More Moore mixtape featuring Maverick Sabre and Dan Caplen. It is the start of a brand new compelling chapter for her.

Lily explains, “’Hard Days Love’ is about knowing when it’s time to give up. Being a musician is my favourite thing in the world but the last few years made that nearly impossible, and to lose that part of myself nearly over night was the hardest break up I’ve ever gone through! A sexy little cocktail of the world going mad and my own personal issues finally catching up with me, meant it felt like the world was putting a big old middle finger up to me and all my friends trying to make a life in London.”

Mad Painter released ‘Rock and Roll Samurai’ on January 19^th.

‘Rock and Roll Samurai’ is on Mad Painter’s upcoming album ‘Splashed’.

Mad Painter is a new band in the Boston, Lincolnshire, area. It is deeply rooted in the melodic rock tradition of the 1970s. They play mostly original music, ranging from Woodstock-era psychedelic rock to glam-tinged rock ‘n’ roll to epic heavy anthems. It consists of four individuals with wildly ranging backgrounds. At the centre of Mad Painter is Alex Gitlin, the songwriter and creator of the concept. Capably backing him is drummer Al Hendry, as well as bassist Kenne Highland, a true veteran of the Boston rock scene. The newest addition is guitarist Al Naha, who plays with Kenne in Kenne Highland Airforce. They’ve played, in different line-ups and guises, and in many venues around the Boston area, as well as the Winter Tanglefest in the Poconos.

It’s always a good time when you go to their shows, and you know what to expect – nostalgic 70s rock vibes and stage gear to match, great musicianship and songs that will make you get up and bop around, singing and clapping along.

Lexie Carroll released her new single, ‘Violet’ on 19^th January.

London based one to watch Lexie Carroll has shared her new single and video ‘Violet’. She also announced a new EP project which is set for release this May.

Having released her début EP ‘When the Sun Came Up’ last year, Lexie Carroll’s singles ‘Annual Birthday Cry’ and ‘Christmas Day’ followed. She’s also had a string of impressive gig support slots, as well as hosting a sold-out headline show at The Grace in London in December.

Kick-starting the New Year with strong momentum behind her, 18 year old Lexie Carroll has built an authentic Gen Z fan base thanks to her relatable lyrics and subject matter. Blending folk, indie and pop with a heartfelt and often poignant sentiment, her new track ‘Violet’ showcases a bigger and bolder sound with an upbeat message of encouragement dedicated to a close friend. Swelling guitars and drums balance the softness of Lexie’s lyricism, creating a motivational anthem that perfectly captures those feelings of teenage angst.

Speaking of the inspiration behind ‘Violet’, Lexie explains, “I wrote ‘Violet’ because my friend was going through a difficult time and it was hard to get through to them. So in the song I’m just saying “hold on, I know your brain’s saying it won’t get better, but it will.”

‘Sway’ is from Jadu Heart’s new album ‘Derealised’.

On January 20th, the London-based duo Jadu Heart (Diva Jeffrey and Alex Headford) released their highly anticipated third album ‘Derealised’. The album was self-recorded and produced in full from their home in Stoke Newington. Having now notched up north of 200 million streams and nearly 2 million Spotify monthly listeners, Jadu Heart stand as one of the most exciting prospects on the cusp of mainstream success.

‘Derealised’ was written as an antidote to – and growing acceptance of – a baffling and dispassionate world. It is a celebration of humanity despite all of its failings. The album captures them accepting “that the world is a weird place” rather than fighting against the feelings. One of the mental health issues the pair suffered from and then came to understand, derealisation, gives the new album its title.

On 21^st January, The Kody Norris Show released ‘I Call Her Sunshine’.

Kody Norris says, “When looking for new material to record, you never know where you might find it. A good friend of mine, the late John Buckwheat Greene brought ‘I Call Her Sunshine’ to my attention as he thought it would suit the sound of my band. John was on the original recording of this with the Laurel Mountain Boys back in the 70s. Seconds into the kick-off I was hooked and knew right away that Josiah’s powerful high lead would certainly suit this number, so we reassembled our trio putting Mary Rachel on tenor and myself on baritone. We had a blast recording this one and sure hope it’ll be enjoyed by all who hear it.”

Blondshell released ‘Joiner’ on 24^th January.

The self-titled ‘Blondshell’ LP is due for release on 7^th April 2023. Yves Rothman in LA produced it. To coincide with the album’s announcement, a new track, ‘Joiner’, is streaming now and exemplifies Blondshell’s ability to layer a wry sense of humour with weighty topics.

Describing the new single, Blondshell explains, “I was listening to a lot of Britpop when I wrote this song. A lot of those bands like The Verve, Pulp, Suede, and Blur channelled dark subject matter, drugs, and all this dirty stuff, but with a fun acoustic guitar under it. I was listening to The Replacements, too. That’s what this song was inspired by sonically. I wanted it to feel like you’re watching HBO, where even though it’s heavy, it’s still a good time.”

We’ve previously heard ‘Sepsis’ from Blondshell (Week 80, January 2023), which was released when she announced her tour. She is currently touring in the US, and will be coming to Europe and the UK in May.

On January 25^th, Gary Nichols released ‘Fire in the Dark’.

Gary says, “Man, I’m so excited to be making music again. I haven’t recorded an album since the ‘Muscle Shoals Recordings’ with The SteelDrivers back in 2014. So much has happened since then and I can’t wait to tell you about it. When Billy Droze and I started writing and kicking around ideas last year, he played ‘Fire In The Dark’ for me and I immediately felt a connection to the song. The song talks about the hold the singer’s lover has on his heart and, to me, it mirrors my struggle with substance abuse. It’s a lonesome song but still makes you want to dance!”

Appearing on the track, produced by Billy Droze, is Gary Nichols on vocals and guitar, Seth Taylor on guitar, Josh Swift on dobro, Tim Crouch on bass, mandolin, and fiddle, Ronnie Stewart on banjo and John Meador on background vocals. The track is available from RBR Entertainment.

 

Sorcha Richardson released ‘Jackpot’ on January 25^th.

We previously heard ‘Shark Eyes’ from Sorcha Richardson (Week 56, July 2022). Now, following her recent nomination for the Choice Music Award ‘Album Of The Year’ (Winner announced March 9th), Sorcha Richardson is releasing a stunning edit of her song ‘Jackpot’. It is from her new album ‘Smiling Like An Idiot’ which was released in September.

About ‘Jackpot’ Sorcha says, “’Jackpot’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it was one of those songs that kind of wrote itself. It’s about the very earliest days of a relationship, when nothing’s been confessed and you’re still on very unsteady footing. It is about asking the other person to take a leap of faith and bet on you, even if circumstances are complicated. It’s my way of saying “don’t you think we’d be worth it?” And wincing as I wait for the answer. James Vincent McMorrow produced this one with me and really helped me see the magic in its simplicity.”

‘Curse of Beauty’ is from Barbara Blue’s new album which was released on 26^th January.

Barbara Blue has been entertaining us for a long time. She performed 5 nights a week for nearly 25 years on Beale Street where she was honoured with a brass note on ‘The Beale Street Walk of Fame’. Both the Hard Rock Café Memphis and Pittsburgh, PA honoured her with a Memorabilia Case. She’s also received numerous awards for her talent. She has had 5 years of successful tours of Australia, along with a host of international festivals and continues to travel around the world to select festivals, gigs, and events. She has now released a new album, ‘From the Shoals’.

On 27^th January, Samia released ‘Honey’.

Samia has shared two new songs off her highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘Honey’, which was released on Friday, January 27th. The two tracks are ‘Breathing Song’ and the album’s title track, ‘Honey’. The release of these two singles comes with a striking new video for ‘Honey’. This video for ‘Honey’s title track symbolically captures the album’s recurrent themes of interconnectivity, community, vulnerability, accountability, and friendship as two different versions of Samia perform; one onstage to the warm embrace of a friendly audience singing along with every word, and one on display in an empty bar singing to nothing but a watchful camera lens.

Samia says, “Tried writing ‘Breathing Song’ a thousand times and couldn’t get it right. Played one of its iterations for Molly Sarlé on zoom and she was like “you just told me a really powerful story before you played this, write it again and just tell the story,” so I did; I just said what happened, from my perspective. Got to play it for her again when it was finished and we cried. ‘Honey’ takes place in the same world as ‘Breathing Song’. It’s about always being drunk enough that you don’t have to look around. To me it’s the saddest song I’ve ever written, because it’s mocking my attempt to convince people I was good. Caleb Wright turned it into a campfire song, though, and I love that it can be interpreted as fun too.”

Deyaz has recently released ‘I’ll scream (All the Words)’.

Multi-hyphenate musician Deyaz kicks off 2023 with the release of his highly anticipated, viral single ‘I’ll Scream (All The Words)’ It’s the track he has been teasing acoustically across social media over the past two months. A truly emotive and mind-silencing moment, ‘I’ll Scream – as with all of Deyaz’s music – comes from the heart and is a raw dose of honest emotion. It’s sweet honey offered on a sharp knife of a heart-breaking plea: “The walls are falling, are you listening?” There’s a fragility to ‘I’ll Scream’ – one that almost makes the listener want to reach out to Deyaz and hold his hand through its entirety. With a new project hinted on the horizon, Deyaz’s work rate is inimitable, having only released his début mixtape last year. At the end of last year, he completed a sold-out EU and UK tour, where he shared the plethora of unheard tracks he has under his belt.
