Cucamaras have released a new single, ‘Cotton Wool’.

Following on from their last single, ‘Porcelain’, Cucamaras make their 2023 music début with ‘Cotton Wool’. The track unravels another layer to the Nottingham four-piece’s sound. Here the band explores internal heartache through their most ambitious, yet melodic, soundscape to date.

Guitarist and vocalist, Olly Bowley, says “Cotton Wool is a story of admiration, whilst feeling like you’re in someone’s shadow. There’s this clumsy individual who’s running into all sorts of problems, whilst the other is sleeping peacefully – the former isn’t ready to lose that persons influence on their life.

The single will form part of Cucamaras’ new EP, ‘Buck Rogers Time’, which dropped in May 2023. The 5-track EP explores a range of topics, with the theme of longing for more and a sense of urgency that emanates across the varied soundscape that the band has created

You can follow Cucamaras on Insta and Facebook.

Gabriel have released their new single, ‘Holy Water, Fire and Ice’.

Gabriel is an international, internet-based collaboration between singer/songwriter Sally Elsey from England, and guitarist/producer Albert Vinasco, an American musician now living in Argentina.

Formed in April of 2009, Sally and Albert met via their online participation in the musician community site, Broadjam. Although separated by thousands of miles and the vast Atlantic Ocean, both musicians had common musical roots and influences. Both spent their early years listening to The Beatles and then branching into broader progressive rock and early metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Yes and Queen. Early on, Sally and Albert sought to pay tribute to these great bands while bringing their own unique style of composition and arrangement to the genres of progressive rock and metal music.

Together, Sally and Albert, combine their highly melodic approaches to create music that is both sweet and powerful, with lush vocal and guitar harmonies, dynamic approaches to rhythm, and innovative melodies.

Gabriel released their self-titled début album ‘Gabriel’ in November of 2009. This has since been followed by six more albums, plus a compilation album, ‘Asmodeus’. We heard ‘Hounds from Heaven’ from that album, last summer (June 2022, Week 51).

All music is written, recorded and produced by Gabriel. Guitars, bass guitars and synths (including drum programming) are played by Albert, and piano, synths and all vocals are performed by Sally.

Gabriel have a website, at gabrielthemusic.com, and are on Facebook and Bandcamp.

Lydia Ford released ‘Burning Out’ on May 3rd.

At the same time as releasing the single, ‘Burning Out’, Lydia also announced her début album, ‘Faking It’. It will be released in September 2023. The album was born out of a collaboration with producer Sam Stevenson during Berlin’s lockdown in 2021.

Lydia’s song writing is primarily informed by her own experiences, with a theme of being in your twenties and struggling to get your life together. The single ‘Burning Out’ describes the feeling of being overwhelmed, stressed, and burnt out. The lyrics describe the pressure to maintain a façade of being fine on the outside, while on the inside obsessing over feeling left behind and lacking purpose.

About the single Lydia says, “Despite knowing that the feeling wouldn’t last forever, I felt stuck in this cycle of burnout when writing this song with Matt Attard almost 2 years into the pandemic. The gang vocals section of the song, where lots of my friends join in and sing the chorus, represents a collective experience of feeling burnt out and overwhelmed. It gives the impression that I’m not alone in their struggle and that others can relate to the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of burnout. I hope that the chorus becomes a sort of anthem that brings people together and encourages them to share their feelings.

SBTRKT have unveiled their new track ‘Days Go By’ featuring Toro y Moi.

We heard ‘Ghost’ from SBTRKT back in August (Week 61). Now he’s unveiled the new track ‘Days Go By’ featuring Toro y Moi as well as announcing his new album ‘The Rat Road’. Released on May 5th, ‘The Rat Road’ is SBTRKT’s first body of work since 2016’s ‘Save Yourself’.

‘The Rat Road’ marks a new era for the British producer, and it cannot begin without acknowledging the previously-masked identity.

SBTRKT’s Aaron Jerome says, “A lot of my prior press coverage was as a masked, elusive character. My storyline became attached to the mask. A lot has been projected onto or written for me, diluting what I actually created and then, that being attributed to others around me.” After the tightly-packed first five years of SBTRKT and its many successes, SBTRKT retracted while Aaron Jerome stepped in to observe the landscape.
He admits, “I realised it was time to re-evaluate who I worked with or what I was wanting to achieve or create. Compared to a decade ago, there is an element of there being more freedom now to do this, but it is also juxtaposed with the control that social media algorithms and DSPs have in the way music is being consumed.

Upcoming Live Dates

Aug 19th – Field Day Festival – London, UK

SBTRKT are on Insta, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Sonz of Thunder released ‘Joy to the World’ on May 5th.

Following their previous single ‘Eagles Wings’ – which we heard back June last year (Week 49) – reggae/dancehall duo Sonz of Thunder UK (SOTUK) have shared their new single ‘Joy To The World’.

Known for their infectious flow over the years, the guys have recently adopted the exuberant sounds of the Motherland. This is heard in their singles, ‘Blessing Pon Blessings’ and ‘Destiny’s Calling’. Continuing the buoyant vibes inspired by the continent, provided by upcoming Ghanaian producer Biskit Beats, ‘Joy to the World’ is an ode to find beauty, peace and pure joy in the world, despite the current climate, and to give thanks to the creator for the beautiful and joyous opportunities that unexpectedly arises.

SOTUK consists of brothers Shane and Dean Brown. They have been spreading the words of inspiration across the UK for over a decade. This has earned them a steady following in the gospel and mainstream communities. In the middle of the pandemic, which presented various adversities for many musicians, the North-West Londoners came on top and scooped the Music & Media Platforms Awards (TMMP) for best reggae act in 2021.

Their first official release of 2023, marks a new and exciting chapter of great things to come from SOTUK. ‘Joy to the World’ came out on 5th May.

Nightbus released their new single, ‘Mirrors’ on 5th May.

Manchester-based Nightbus have shared their new single – only their second-ever release – ‘Mirrors’. Both tracks will feature on the band’s début 7″ which came out on 5th May. ‘Mirrors’ is the follow up to the band’s red hot début single ‘Way Past Three’ which we heard back in March (Week 88).

Originally hailing from varying parts of the north of England, Nightbus found common ground in their mutual music taste. To make and write late-night music soon became the ethos of the band. Sound tracking sleepless, frenzied nights out, the journey home and everything in between. Their atmospheric soundscapes beckon you into the mind-set of a twenty-something, immersed in the damp, grey, vice soaked North West of England.

Expanding on the single, Nightbus say, “‘Mirrors’ was one of the first tracks we wrote. The lyrics track the mind of delusion and confusion, a warped narrative that can only be resolved by that moment of realisation. The lyric “when these mirrors speak my mind it’s a lost direction” defines that moment I know many of us know far too well. It’s essentially the “what the **** am I doing” part of the night. I think too many of us thrive within the reasons to get messed up, when in reality these nights always lead to regret, embarrassment or having to soothe yourself with some kind of justification.”

See Nightbus live in 2023:
02 Sep | Manchester Psych Fest, Manchester
23 Sep| Float Along Festival, Sheffield

Nightbus are on Facebook, Twitter and myspace.
