Bob began his career as a local newspaper journalist in Suffolk, before moving into publishing. His historical interests were broad, as were his associations with many organisations. He also furthered a wide-range of historical knowledge and activities in Suffolk. His numerous publications made a huge contribution to the canon of local history in the county. Plus, indeed, of Norfolk where he was born. The Suffolk Local History Council (SLHC) is inaugurating a £500 prize in memory of Bob.
SLHC was formed in 1953 and continues today to actively encourage and support the study of local history in the county. Its journal Suffolk Review is produced twice a year, with articles contributing to a growing body of knowledge about Suffolk history. Bob was a very long term member of SLHC. He served on its Executive Committee for decades, many of them as Vice Chairman.
SLHC is inviting those interested in local history in Suffolk to submit to the competition a piece of original work (c. 5,000 words), suitable for publication in the Suffolk Review. Please see https://slhc.org.uk/malster-prize/ for full criteria and entry details. Any further queries, please email: [email protected] Closing date: 15th August 2025. The Prize giving will be at SLHC AGM on 15th November 2025.
